Meet… Murrelli

We love to introduce you to exciting new breastfeeding brands, especially when the clothes are lovingly designed and made in the UK.

READ ON to find out about Alyson, the founder and designer, their unique breastfeeding access and the smart and well fitting Murrelli breastfeeding styles…….

Describe Murrelli in 5 words?!

Fashionable, versatile, innovative, empowering, classic.

Who is the Murrelli breastfeeding mum?

The Murrelli mum is any woman who is breastfeeding or pumping and wants to be able to feel confident in her clothes, not having had to compromise her own comfort and style for breastfeeding access! She is someone who enjoys fashion and who has felt left out walking down the high street. Specifically, she wants to have options in her wardrobe that allow her to, even temporarily, ditch the casual tops and head out to lunch, a formal occasion or work, feel her best and at the same time be able to easily breastfeed / pump whenever and wherever she needs to.

What sets you apart from other breastfeeding clothing brands?

Our tops and dresses are different to other brands in the market because they all feature our unique breastfeeding access points which combine invisible zips and a moveable inner layer, giving you ultimate privacy control over exactly the amount of exposure you want while breastfeeding or pumping.  It’s feel-good fashion, breastfeeding clothing and a nursing cover all in one!

What’s more, our garments are inspired by high street trends and designed to be seasonless, versatile pieces that you can wear for a range of occasions and throughout your breastfeeding journey (and beyond!). There’s no reason why you should have to compromise on the look or fit of your clothes just because you need them to have breastfeeding access too! You can have it all!

(Our unique access points are protected so you will only find them at Murrelli!)

I believe you design the clothing yourself?

Yes, I do! I’m Alyson, the founder and designer behind Murrelli.

I’ve always had an interest in fashion and, after being taught how to sew by my Granny, I developed a bit of an obsession with how clothes are put together. These things were just a hobby until I became a mum and experienced first-hand the lack of choice in breastfeeding clothing and the importance of being able to feel confident and like ‘you’ while feeding. I really struggled with feeling stuck in clothes that just weren’t me, didn’t fit or left me feeling overly exposed while feeding. So, utilising my business degree, I decided to do something about it!

Your designs are smart, stylish and timeless, where does your inspiration come from?

Inspiration for my designs comes from current high street trends as well as classic, timeless fashion styles and silhouettes. I love to take inspiration from both modern and classic styles and bring them together to create pieces that will feel stylish and fun to wear from the moment they arrive with you and for months and years after!

When I started designing our pieces, I felt that there was already a focus on casual breastfeeding styles like t-shirts, hoodies and stretchy dresses and so I’m excited to bring some more smart, stylish and timeless options to breastfeeding women!

Tell us more about your decision to manufacture in Scotland?

All Murrelli garments are designed and manufactured here in Scotland. In fact, our manufacturer is just a short drive away from our office!

Keeping manufacturing in the UK is incredibly important to me as I want to create a responsible, slow fashion brand that has the customer in mind at every stage. Choosing a Scottish manufacturer has allowed me to be confident that our manufacturing is responsible (i.e. fairly paid and with good working conditions) but also means that I can be heavily involved in each step of the process to ensure that the end garments are of the highest quality for our customers.

It is great to see new breastfeeding clothing brands, how did Murrelli come about?

The idea for Murrelli started as a personal frustration that I couldn’t find anything that allowed me feel like ‘me’ while breastfeeding my daughter. I breastfed for 14 months and really struggled to build confidence feeding when out and about because I was so conscious I was wearing clothes that weren’t my style, didn’t fit or had access points that left me feeling overly exposed.

I still wanted to wear ‘nice’ high street styles, wanted them to fit my postnatal body and most importantly, I wanted to be able to feed my daughter easily, discreetly and without feeling I’d had to half undress in the process. It was then that I decided to doodle out some of the key pieces I felt were missing in breastfeeding wardrobes and went to work to develop them!

Where did the name come from?

As the idea for the brand itself came about because of my daughter and our own journey with breastfeeding, I wanted to find a name that was a bit different and represented where it all started. So, the brand name Murrelli is actually a combination of my maiden name (Murray) and married name (Belli)! I love it and think it’s just the right for the brand.

Describe your own personal style?

My personal style is very much what you see in Murrelli! I love classic colours and shapes, rich prints and versatile clothes! While I do enjoy casual jumpers and jeans (who doesn’t!), since having my daughter I really appreciate the confidence that wearing a nice fitting top or dress gives me!

What is your favourite piece in your collection?

Oh this is a tough one as it changes from day to day! I would say that I’ll always have a soft spot for our Eden dress simply because I would have loved to have been able to wear a dress like that to a formal occasion and feed confidently! I love that Murrelli can give women an option to dress up as they normally would, for say a wedding, and not feel they’ll need to struggle out of their dress or find a quiet room to feed or pump.

What do you think breastfeeding mums are looking for?

I think breastfeeding women are looking for (and deserve!) clothes that let them feel like themselves, make them feel comfortable and confident without having had to sacrifice fit or style in the pursuit of breastfeeding functionality.

Overall, I think breastfeeding mums are simply looking for ‘normal’ clothes that help them feel good and allow them to breastfeed / pump in the way they choose! Breastfeeding and being ‘mum’ can be such a whirlwind that finding ways to feel like ‘your old self’ can be difficult, yet little things like being able to wearing a nice top, that makes you feel confident and able to feed easily, can make a big difference.

How important is it to you to be eco conscious, with your sustainable packaging and also making sure your clothing enjoys a full life and even considering it’s end of life care?

It is important to me that the brand minimises its impact on the environment. So, in addition to local manufacturing, we send all our products out to customers in recyclable or reusable packing (in many cases having already been made from recycled materials) and we encourage customers to consider ways the clothes might be reused or recycled when they are finished with them. As the producer of these garments, we consider it our responsibility to assist the customer in making these choices!

We recognise that there are still many more things we can do to reduce our impact, which we will be working hard on in the coming months and years.

What can we expect from you going forward, will you be adding to your current range/styles?

Yes we will! We have lots of exciting plans including new styles and fabrics to add in the coming year. We also offer a range of accessories which we’ll be adding to as well. Keep an eye on our social media and website for information on when you can expect these!

What are your aspirations for Murrelli?

I would love for Murrelli to become the go-to brand for breastfeeding women looking for smart/causal and formal clothing options! The feedback we’ve had from customers since our launch in July has been fantastic  – we recently had one mum thank us for helping her to feel stylish and confident again at her first occasion out with baby, she felt so special being complimented on her outfit and loved that she could breastfeed easily and no one could tell. We would love to help many more women feel like this!

Is there any advice you would like to offer breastfeeding mums?

Every journey is different so try not to compare yourself to anyone else! Breastfeeding is a skill that you and baby will learn together so give yourselves time, ask for help if you need it and be kind to yourself!

Thank you to Murrelli for speaking to CIBII.
