Meet Mammarelli

Mammarelli is all about luxury, stylish athleisurewear for pregnancy, nursing and beyond! We speak to Jo who is one half of the Cheshire-based brand created by two sisters. Jo is a mum of 3 and fitness enthusiast and her sister Ali is a pre and post-natal coach and former clothing buyer, sounds like a winning combination, we find out more about their brand, their athleisure wear, where their desire for the detail came from and which football team they worked with!

Describe Mammarelli in 5 words?

Stylish athleisurewear for pregnancy, nursing and beyond (6 words but hoping ‘for’ and ‘and’ doesn’t count!)

What can breastfeeding parents expect from Mammarelli?

Functional, stylish athleisurewear to support women in their maternity, post natal and nursing journey, giving them the confidence to feed their children hassle free.

We started Mammarelli as we believed there to be a gap in the market for functional yet fashionable maternity wear, in particular athleisurewear. We wanted to offer something for mums that wasn’t going to be another ‘throw away’ maternity wardrobe purchase so our products can be worn both throughout pregnancy as well as pre and post natally.

All our products are carefully designed so they offer a subtle nursing option integrated into them making it discreet enough to not notice. As well as all of our tops being nursing friendly, we also have pre and post natal leggings and we both pretty much live in all of our clothes as they are so comfy and Ali currently doesn’t even have any kids! Our aim is to be a pioneer in this field constantly bringing our customers the most classic and elegant, designs whilst also being fit for purpose.

How does your clothing help breastfeeding mums?

It allows for quick and easy access feeding on the go whilst also keeping you covered up as much or as little as you want. We all know nursing can be nerve wracking and hard when you’re just getting familiar with it. It can also be difficult as well as when babies are get older and nosier and they are constantly pulling on and off feeding so our range makes this journey as easy as possible. Even if you’re a pro at breastfeeding, having tops with easy access makes life a little bit easier and quicker when you need it most! We want to empower Mamma’s to look and feel confident at a time when everything is changing and new.

Tell us more about the technical fabrics you chose to use? What difference does this make to your clothing?

All our fabrics are high quality and have been trialled and tested until we’re 100% happy with them. For our tops we only use soft fabrics which feel smooth on the skin and for our leggings we use sweat wicking fabric to help regulate your temperature but also keeping you fresher and odour free for longer. We are also both extremely passionate about the fit of garments and believe this can be the difference between an outfit looking polished and perfectly ‘put together’ and not, therefore we have spent a lot of time refining the fit.

The range has been designed with versatility in mind so the clothing adapts to flatter women’s changing body size, ensuring a great fit throughout all stages of pregnancy, nursing an beyond without compromising on style or look.

Describe the Mammarelli breastfeeding mum?

In general our products are aimed at the busy mums who are constantly on the go. Mammarelli mums and mum’s to be can wear our clothes in the gym, whilst running round after their babies and everyday because they look stylish and elegant in an effortless way without compromising on comfort, support or functionality.

How did Mammarelli come into being, why did you start up your own breastfeeding clothing brand?

The idea began when I was having a bad day with my baby boy and Ali joked about my unflattering outfit choice which pushed me over the edge and Mammarelli was born. Our brand is about great fitting athleisurewear keeping you looking chic and feeling great which was something I just couldn’t find when I had my first child 3 years ago. I also wanted to be able to throw an outfit together quickly without much thought and when time wasn’t on my side but still look stylish and like I had made an effort – a very specific brief!

Where did the name come from?

The brand name Mammarelli, is from our mother’s side of the family who are Italian, incorporating her maiden name Tognarelli into the brand name and using the Italian spelling of Mamma rather than the British version. Our mother’s Italian style was also something we wanted to feature heavily in our designs as she drummed into us the importance of great fitting clothing and she always managed to pull off the elegant yet relaxed look in true Italian style.

Tell us a bit about you and your background?

We’re a Cheshire based brand run by my sister Ali and myself.

I’ve always loved playing sport and keeping fit and I’m a mum to a 3 year old boy and 7 month old twin boys and before starting Mammarelli I worked in football logistics for Man City 1st team. Ali is a personal trainer and a pre and post natal qualified coach and former clothing buyer, so it felt like we had a good combination of skills and fire in our bellies to develop a new range. We are passionate about getting it right and have spent a great deal of time developing our collection.

Jo and Ali

Describe your own personal style?

Simple but always polished – I learnt from my mum you can’t go out of the house without wearing a belt if you’ve got belt loops and you should always look as good from the back as you do from the front!

What is your favourite piece in your collection?

Our breastfeeding jumper, it’s one of our best-selling products and can finish off any outfit.

What inspires you to design your clothing?

We’re constantly looking out for new designs and thinking of clever ways of subtly integrating functional features into our products. We take a lot of inspiration from current new trends which filter down from the catwalks to keep our designs fresh whilst ensuring we can make them functional and suitable for our customers. We love the sophisticated, classic and elegant style that a lot of the Italian and European markets do so well and so we get a lot of our ideas from looking in those markets.

What do you think breastfeeding mums are looking for?

On the whole I think most of us just want tops that look great but are also fit for purpose so we don’t have to compromise on style or function which so often seemed to be the case.

What are your thoughts on the breastfeeding fashion available to mums?

I think it’s getting better and there is a lot more choice now than previously. Female athleisurewear has really taken off in recent years but maternity ranges have been left behind with few major sporting brands offering maternity activewear as well as limited high street options which lack the same level of technical design, so this is where Mammarelli bridges the gap.

What do you feel has been Mammarelli’s greatest achievement so far?

In the year since we have launched we have experienced a great reaction to our brand and have been lucky enough to able to expand the range a lot sooner than we anticipated which we are both really proud of.

The fact that we launched pretty much as the Covid-19 pandemic hit and we have still grown despite it, is something which fills us with a lot of confidence and confirms the demand for our products. The rate at which we have been growing over the last few months in particular has been phenomenal, we have reached over 1000 new mums in the last month alone and we have seen orders doubling month on month. It really has been incredible and we still have to pinch ourselves every time we get an order through. So we are very proud of what we’ve achieved so far but also hugely grateful for all of our customers who have supported us since starting as none of this would have been possible without them.

What can we expect from you going forward?

Since we launched we have continually asked for feedback from our customers and we feel we now have an even better understanding of what mums want so we are looking forward to bringing a few more hero products into our collection over the coming months soon.

We want to create a lifestyle brand that encompasses all areas of being a mum with a holistic approach to health and well-being.

Will you be adding to your capsule collection?

We are currently working on some new pieces which we are really excited about. Some are due to launch before Christmas and some just after so watch this space!

Any advice, including fitness advice, you would like to offer breastfeeding mums?

First and foremost listen to your body, if you feel like you need to rest – rest. If you feel like you need a nutritious meal you are probably in need of one, you know your body better than anyone else and learning to be in tune with your body can be the biggest key to success.

Personally I have found becoming a mum one of the best but hardest and most physically (and emotionally!) demanding things I have ever done so it’s so important that you stay as healthy as possible to deal with everything motherhood throws at you. Don’t forget to take time for yourself whilst being a mother.
